Madekwe was raised in an ethnically diverse family. Her father is a Nigerian-Swiss, and her mother is English. She was raised in the South London Council Estate and attended The Brit School aged 14. The two have collaborated on Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and he was also on the show with Madekwe in the television series Salem.

Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actress, who was born into an extended family. She was the daughter of Patty and Roy Leggat. She was raised by the parents Roy and Patty as well as four brothers who were older than them: Brett, Todd and Bram twins, Rob, and Brett.
