Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up with her mom's family. Russell recalled how as a child she was not accepted by her peers due to the colour of her skin. The family was struggling financially and had to move sixteen times in order to pursue her father's job. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there was always an opportunity for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she would like to pursue a career in ballet, and later be a painter. When she turned 18, she took her first acting class, and finally found her way to. She used her savings from work to purchase a car and drove to Los Angeles, to audition. She would go back to work when her money was gone, and then start the audition process. She continued this routine for four more years until she was offered her first television part.
